Siegerrebe Wine: History, Food Pairings, and More

May 31, 2021

If you’re a white wine drinker, there’s one distinct and special wine you must get your hands on. It’s called Siegerrebe.

This type of wine will take you by surprise. While most white wines are known for their sweetness and distinct notes, Siegerrebe sets itself apart with its dry nature and a hint of tropical flavour.

Siegerrebe (pronounced zee-geh-RAY-buh) is a white wine grape variety known to grow in Germany. Its pink and red-skinned grape variety (used in the production of white wines) makes for a sensational must weight.

The German translation of Siegerrebe is “victory wine.” This wine lives up to this translation, as it tantalizes the taste buds of every wine taster unexpectedly. The name is derived from Siegerrebe's ability to create record-breaking yields. It was first created in the early 20th century (1929) by the German Viticulturist Dr. Georg Scheu at a grape-breeding institute in Alzey in Rheinhessen.

Georg Scheu's son Heinz Scheu had once claimed that Siegerrebe resulted from the self-pollination of Madeleine Angevine, a white wine grape from the Loire Valley in France. In 1958, Siegerrebe acquired varietal protection. It was released for general growth later that same year.

Siegerrebe is often planted in colder climates like Vancouver Island, England, Northern Okanagan, and the Fraser Valley.

Although Siegerrebe is known to have pink and red skins, it results in a clear liquid when pressed.

Taste and Notes of Siegerrebe Grapes

When fully produced, Siegerrebe becomes a rich, gold colour and is bright in flavour, separating it from other white wines in the industry.

The grapes’ Gewürztraminer heritage gives off a “honeysuckle muscat'' aroma with notes of lychee.

It also carries the scents of rose petals and various spices with hints of tangerine and pink grapefruit. These scents can be deceiving as people would assume the sweet fruit aroma of Siegerrebe gives off a generally sweet taste. In actuality, this wine is much drier than its smell. The dry style is a very popular go-to wine for social gatherings.

Best Siegerrebe Food Pairings

What’s a good wine without a full meal? If you’re looking to pair Siegerrebe with the most appropriate dish, you are best off with light, curry, and creamy Asian foods. Example dishes include:

  • Creamy Thai Sweet Potato Curry
  • Spicy Coconut Curry Chicken and Noodles
  • Chinese Beef Curry
  • Sour Cream Shrimp Curry
  • Vichyssoise
  • Riebekuchen (potato fritters served with stewed apples)

Single-pairing examples may include fish, creamy potatoes, butter chicken, honey-glazed Ham soft cheese, and food with spicy curries.
